About this piece

Can a country's geographical border serve as an elegant fruit bowl, or is it a standalone piece that looks best completely empty? The Republic bowl (originally named Heimweh, or homesickness) was created as part of Maxim Velčovský's diploma thesis and remains one of his most daring conceptual achievements.

In this design, Velčovský ironically distances himself from Alvar Aalto's iconic organic vases and transforms the topographical silhouette of the Czech Republic into a noble porcelain object. For foreigners, it is a fascinating, abstract geometric form; for those in the know, it is a direct reference to national identity. The traditional "onion pattern" decorative motif further connects the entire concept with a deeply rooted Central European porcelain tradition. It is an object that blurs the lines between utilitarian design and fine sculptural art.

Why will you love the Republic Onion bowl?

  • Design with a story and a statement: The object carries a subtle irony, nostalgia, and a reference to the history of both world and Czech design.

  • Strong visual centerpiece: Thanks to its extraordinary shape and detailed onion pattern, it functions as a dominant element on a table or interior shelf – whether you fill it or let it stand empty.

  • Iconic diploma project: Acquire a seminal work from the very beginning of Maxim Velčovský's career, which continues to resonate in galleries and private collections worldwide.
