Some objects are designed for the eye, others for the hands. Richard Sapper's 9091 kettle was designed for the ear. It is the first melodic object in Alessi's history and remains one of the most fascinating works ever to enter the kitchen.
In designing it, Richard Sapper drew on childhood memories in Germany and the sound of ship's horns. Instead of an aggressive whistle that disturbs your peace, he fitted the kettle with a unique brass whistle with two tuning forks. The result is a harmonious chord (E and B) that tells you the water is boiling with the elegance of an operatic aria.
